How to distinguish carbon fiber sheets and carbon fiber plates!

Blog Article

Carbon fiber is the latest material that has gained huge popularity because of its properties like strength and lightweight. The term “Sheet” signifies a thin light material. For example: a sheet of paper. In contrast “plate” signifies a heavy material that is thick like ¾ inch plate. However, large carbon fiber sheets are more popular because the material is available in sheets most of the time due to its lightweight and high-strength properties.

Carbon fiber sheets

Carbon fibers sheets are made up of woven carbon fiber fabric mixing with resin to enhance its strength and other properties.

Types of Carbon Fiber Sheets!

Vacuum infusion

To produce these, add a layer of dry carbon fiber fabric onto a mold. Then, a vacuum is used to force the resin into fabric. Then the mold is placed under the pressure so that the resin is distributed equally in all the parts of the material minimizing the risk of voids.

Pros:

  • Provide great bonding strength between the resin and fibers

  • Comes with consistent and uniform thickness

  • Provides high-quality finish in the final products

Cons:

  • One of the prime limitations of the type is its high manufacturing cost due to the complex manufacturing process.

  • It requires a lot of time for manufacturing or production processes.

Compression method

These sheets are prepared by placing a layer of dry carbon fabric and resin into a mold directly. Then high pressure is provided to form solid composite. The method ensures that the resin and fibers are packed tightly to each other.

Pros

  • The low manufacturing cost is the prime advantage

  • Simple manufacturing process

  • Provide high-quality finish

  • The production requires less lead time

Cons

  • Lower bonding strength

  • Inconsistent or uneven material thickness

Carbon fiber plates

As we discussed above, it is a thick and rigid piece of material made up with multiple layers of resin and fiber. It will not be wrong to say these as thick carbon fiber sheets. The carbon fiber plates are used in a diverse range of applications including construction, motorsports, aerospace and so on.

Types of carbon fiber plates are:

Autoclave cured

These plates are produced by laying several layers of fiber fabric and resin into a mold. Then the autoclave is used to apply pressure and required heat.

Pros

  • Provides a high strength-to-weight ratio

  • Comes with excellent bonding strength

Cons

  • Huge production cost due to complex manufacturing process

  • The production process also requires a lot of lead time

Hand-Laid

These plates are created by laying a lot of carbon fiber fabric and resin layers by hand. Then pressure is exerted for resin’s uniform distribution.

Pros

  • The lower manufacturing cost is the biggest pros of the type of carbon fiber plates.

Cons

  • Lower bonding strength

  • The risk of voids is associated with the curing process.

  • The thickness of the plate might be inconsistent.

Now, it depends on the application and which type of plate or sheet is used. Different types of materials are used in different types of industries and the numbers of applications are increasing with each passing day.
